The Herts and Essex hospital is situated in Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire. The rehabilitation unit has 28 beds between two wards, Oxford and Cambridge. Four of these beds are designated stroke rehabilitation beds that are supported by the East and North Hertfordshire early supported stroke discharge team. The unit caters for patients who need rehabilitation following their stay in an acute setting or need some extra support from the community. The unit has its own occupational therapy and physiotherapy team with a gym and occupational therapy (OT) assessment room.
On admission, each patient is assessed by the multidisciplinary team and a plan of care is formalised involving the patient. The anticipated length of stay will differ from patient to patient depending on their individual needs. On average patients can expect to be on the unit for seven to 14 days.

Useful information
Meals
Hot and cold food is available. A menu is available on a daily basis from which you may choose your meals for the next day. Kosher, vegetarian and other special diets can be catered for. Fresh fruit is available to patients. We appreciate that sometimes patients may not feel like eating at meals times and therefore there is a selection of snacks i.e. toast or biscuits that can provided at any time. Lunch is served in the dining room and all patients are encouraged to come to the dining room for their meals as part of their rehabilitation. Patients who are unable to attend the dining room, can have their meals served in their room.
Visiting Hours
We welcome and encourage the involvement of carers and relatives whilst the person they care for is in hospital. Involving family and friends in care helps to improve wellbeing, communication and the overall experience. We call this approach Partnership in Care. To enable this we have open visiting hours from 2pm to 7pm so you can be as involved as you would like to be. Let the nurse in charge know if you would like to be involved and you will be provided with a carer's lanyard.
Visiting hours are flexible - if you would like to visit outside of these hours, please let the ward manager know.
Travelling by Car
Car parking is available on site with a pay and display system in operation. However, please be aware that at certain times during the day, when patient activity to outpatients clinics is high, it may be difficult to park.
Travelling by Public Transport
Timetables for the bus route in and out of the Herts and Essex hospital are available at the hospital reception and on the ward. Buses 7 and 7A arrive at the hospital on the hour and leaves at every half hour. Nearby is Bishop’s Stortford train station, although this is not within easy walking distance in relation to the hospital.
