RCN industrial action in Hertfordshire – advice for patients and partners

A photo of a nurse with an older patient. Pink background and white text:

We are working hard to keep patients safe during the second day of strike action on Tuesday 20th December, while delivering the best care possible. It is important that people continue to attend appointments as planned - unless we contact you to reschedule. Key services should continue to operate, so nobody should put off seeking urgent or emergency care during the strike.

What you need to do

  • If we have not contacted you, please do attend your appointment as planned
  • GP services are not affected by the strike action – please continue to attend any appointments unless they contact you to reschedule
  • On days where there is strike action patients should call 999 for a medical or mental health emergency. This means if they are seriously ill or injured or their life is at risk
  • Where the situation is not life-threatening visit NHS 111 online or call NHS 111 for support

Impact on HCT services

We have worked with the RCN strike committee to plan for industrial action. Unlike other sectors who strike, some health union members will continue to work to ensure patient safety.

We will not know the full impact of strike action until industrial action starts tomorrow (20 December). However, as we become aware we will inform patients and publish service updates for the public on social media and this website.

Services changes and updates during industrial action on Tuesday 20 December

Unless specified below all our services are running. Those affected by strike action are prioritising the most urgent patients.

If you have an appointment, please attend as normal unless you hear from us.

If you need urgent or life-saving care on Tuesday 20 December, please do not hesitate to come forward and seek help.

As information becomes available, we will update this section with any changes to our services.

We are aware of a water supply issue in Bishop's Stortford where Herts and West Essex Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) is located. This does not affect outpatients appointments and the MIU remains open as normal. The Trust is working with partners to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
