Pharmacy opening hours and staying well over the New Year

If you need medical advice during New Year Bank holidays, some pharmacies will be open to help you across Hertfordshire and West Essex.

Some local pharmacists will be open on New Year’s Day, and the Bank Holiday to offer health advice and treatment for minor illnesses and conditions. Pharmacies that are open during the New Year holiday are listed below:

If you take regular medication, please ensure you have sufficient supplies and please remember to order repeat prescriptions as soon as possible, allowing at least five working days from requesting the prescription from your GP to picking up your medication from the pharmacy.

Please also remind friends and family who may be visiting you to make sure they bring their medication with them – and don’t forget to take yours if you are doing the visiting.

To get a repeat prescription:

  • Use the NHS app or your GP practice’s online form to make a request or use the repeat medication slip from your last prescription and place it in the prescription collection box at reception of your GP practice
  • If you are unable to do that, then contact your GP practice directly during their opening times to discuss how to access your repeat prescription
  • If you are on regular medication, ask your GP practice about electronic repeat dispensing. The GP will authorise a batch of prescriptions for a fixed period of time you can go directly to your nominated pharmacy for your repeat until the batch ends. The pharmacy will let you know when you are on your last prescription and ask you to make an appointment with the surgery to renew the batch
  • If your GP Practice is closed and you have run out of medication, contact your local pharmacy for advice

It’s also a good idea to stock up on general medication such as painkillers, cold/flu medications, antihistamines, oral rehydration salts, anti-diarrhoea tablets and indigestion treatments before the holiday begins. Many own brand medicines can save you money and be just as effective.
