Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality recognised as NHS Hero Award

An NHS nurse with nearly 40 years’ experience who was at the forefront of the local vaccination response during the Covid-19 pandemic has been named a Heart Hertfordshire Hero.

Cath Slater, our Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality has been recognised with an NHS Hero Award at the Heart Hertfordshire Hero Awards 2025 on Friday (21 March 2025). The award honours individuals working in the NHS who have demonstrated outstanding dedication, whether through their care for patients or by offering exceptional support to their colleagues in the face of adversity.

Cath was one of the key figures involved in setting up Covid-19 vaccination centres across the area. As a Queen’s Nurse, she’s committed to learning, development and excellence in patient care and manages the network of Queen’s nurses in the trust. She also manages our Professional Nurse Advocate network, where nurses who are experiencing challenging situations can access support and advice.

In addition, Cath has pioneered wellbeing checks among trust staff, which has led to a number of staff members seeking support for serious health issues.

Chief Executive, Elliot Howard-Jones said: “This award could not have gone to a more suitable person as someone who prioritises patient care and support for colleagues.

“We’re very lucky to have Cath at our trust. She understands that when we look after our staff, everybody benefits – patients, families, carers, managers and the wider community. I’m delighted that her valuable contribution has been recognised in this way.”

Chair, Dr Nicolas Small said: “Cath is a fantastic role model for nurses. She is everything you would want from a nurse – kind, caring and compassionate – and her passion for her profession shines through.

“Her shining example has inspired a new generation of nurses. Well done, Cath, and thank you for everything you have done and continue to do.”

The Heart Hertfordshire Hero Awards ceremony was held at Tewinbury Farm Hotel. The awards recognise those in the community who have shown outstanding support. Other award categories include Community, Young Achiever, Child of Courage, Save the Planet, and Volunteer.
