Diabetic eye screening checks for diabetic retinopathy, a sight-threatening condition that can affect anyone with diabetes. It affects the retina at the back of the eye and is caused when the blood vessels become blocked, leak or grow haphazardly. People with diabetes are at risk of losing their sight through the complication of diabetic retinopathy. If you develop diabetic retinopathy, you may not be aware of any changes to the retina until your vision is impaired, at which point it may not be possible to completely restore vision. So, regular screening is important to monitor retinal changes.
